ADV BAIJU THITTALA

Mayor of Cambridge

Early Involvement in Community Activism

Baiju’s dedication to public service began in 2009 when he became actively involved in community activism through the Indian Workers’ Association. Recognizing the challenges faced by South Indian migrant workers in the UK, he took a proactive approach in addressing employment issues. Through workshops and awareness sessions held across the country, Baiju helped many individuals understand their rights, access job opportunities, and navigate employment laws effectively.

His commitment to labor rights and community welfare grew stronger as he worked closely with marginalized groups, advocating for policies that promote fair treatment and equal opportunities for all workers, regardless of their background.

Advocacy for Non-EU Nurses

One of Baiju’s significant contributions to public service has been his relentless efforts in lobbying Parliament against discriminatory English language requirements for non-EU nurses. With the support of a local Member of Parliament, he spearheaded a campaign highlighting the disproportionate and unreasonable barriers placed on skilled healthcare professionals from non-EU countries. His advocacy played a crucial role in bringing about policy reforms that eventually led to the amendment of these restrictive requirements.

Baiju firmly believes that politics should serve as a platform for advocating for the rights of working-class individuals, ensuring that policies are fair and inclusive. His activism in this area has had a lasting impact on many non-EU nurses who were previously disadvantaged by these regulations.

Election as City Councillor

In 2018, Baiju contested and won the East Chesterton by-election, marking a historic moment as one of the few first-generation councillors from a minority ethnic background in the history of Cambridge City Council. His election was a testament to his deep-rooted connection with the community and his unwavering commitment to social justice.

As a councillor, Baiju worked tirelessly on multiple fronts to create a fairer and more inclusive society. His focus areas included:

  • Addressing socio-economic inequalities affecting underprivileged communities.

  • Championing equal opportunities for all, particularly ethnic minorities.

  • Fighting for workers’ rights, ensuring fair wages and proper working conditions.

Leadership Roles in Cambridge City Council

During his tenure at Cambridge City Council, Baiju played a crucial role in shaping policies related to equality and social justice. His leadership positions included:

  • Lead Councillor for Equalities, where he worked to address racial and economic disparities in the city.

  • Member of the Equalities Panel, ensuring that policy decisions were inclusive and representative of all communities.

  • Vice Chair of the Licensing Committee, overseeing licensing policies to support local businesses and maintain public safety.

  • Chair of the Housing Scrutiny Committee, advocating for affordable housing and better living conditions for residents.

Baiju’s impactful leadership in these roles has helped bridge the gap between policymakers and the communities they serve, ensuring that marginalized voices are heard and considered in decision-making processes.

Advocacy for Social Movements & Policy Changes

Baiju has been at the forefront of major social justice movements in Cambridge. Some of his most notable contributions include:

  • Black Lives Matter (BLM) Motion: As a councillor, Baiju introduced a motion calling on members of Cambridge City Council to officially support the Black Lives Matter movement. The motion was passed unanimously, reinforcing the city’s commitment to fighting racial injustice and discrimination.

  • Campaign for Fair Treatment of Non-EU Nurses: Baiju continued his efforts to push for fair treatment of non-EU nurses by advocating for the Nursing and Midwifery Council to eliminate disproportionate testing standards. His persistent efforts contributed to the eventual revision of these policies.

  • Combating Far-Right Extremism: Recognizing the growing threats of far-right extremism in various parts of the UK, Baiju took an active role in organizing ‘Stand Up Against Racism’ events. These initiatives aimed to foster community solidarity, raise awareness about hate crimes, and advocate for stronger actions against extremist movements.

Commitment to the Community

Baiju has always emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. His public service is driven by a deep sense of gratitude for the support he received when he first arrived in the UK. Through his work in local government and activism, he has continuously strived to make Cambridge a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable city.

Baiju believes that real change comes from empowering the community, and his work reflects his dedication to creating long-term social improvements that benefit all residents, particularly the underprivileged and marginalized groups.
