The Honourable Mayor of Cambridge, Cllr. Baiju Thittala, delivered the keynote address at the International Seminar on Criminal Justice System organized by CSI College for Legal Studies, Kanakkary, Kottayam, on 12th March 2025.
His address, titled “The Manslaughter of the Indian Criminal Justice System: Handcuffed by the Colonial Legacy?”, critically examined the enduring colonial structures embedded in India’s legal system. Mayor Baiju drew from both historical and contemporary perspectives, highlighting how remnants of British-era laws continue to influence legal processes, often at the cost of justice, equity, and timely redressal.
With a background as a practicing criminal defence solicitor and public servant, his insights resonated deeply with the audience, sparking meaningful conversations among students, faculty, and legal professionals present at the seminar.
The college expressed its sincere gratitude to Mayor Baiju Thittala for his enriching presence and valuable perspectives, noting that his speech served as a catalyst for critical reflection on the urgent need for legal reform in India.
